Brainstorming, Keyword Ideas & Market Research

Getting Started

To get started with niche selection make a list of topics, or keyword ideas, that interest you. Don’t hold Niche Marketback, just write down anything that comes to mind! At this point you don’t need to worry about being too specific, you can narrow down the topic later if the topic is too broad, or too general. There are no bad ideas, so feel free to include anything & everything that occurs to you on the list.

List topics you are passionate about, skills, hobbies, fears, problems or solutions to problems & topics you are interested in. If you don’t know much about the topic that is fine, just make sure it is something that you will be able to research & write about without losing interest too quickly.

Brainstorming strategies:

  • Free writing – Make a list of every topic you can think of in 10 minutes. Try to set a minimum of at least 20 topics so you can have a good base to start with.
  •  Set a minimum number of items for each of the topic categories & dig deep till you reach your quota. For example, you could set a minimum of five each. That would be five passions & hobbies, 5 skills, 5 fears, and 5 problems/solutions & 5 topics you would like to learn about.
  • Go Out! – step outside of your usual space. Go to a coffee shop, library, park, university, plaza or bistro. Somewhere different to encourage creativity and open thinking.  This might be hard if you are working on venture at night, but even going outside for awhile onto your balcony or to the yard can help get the creative juices flowing.
  • Browse Amazon, eBay, Your local Library or Bookstore – browse through the books, magazines and items for ideas, interests & long lost hobbies.
  •  Be a Scrooge, then Make a Note of Things That Bother You – If they irritate you, chances are other people share the sentiment. If you find that an irritation or problem of yours is common, and not commonly addressed, then be the one to make it happen! Come up with possible solutions to the problem or issue & create a website around what you learned or think might work.  Another approach could be a site dedicated to venting, although this might best be served by a niche blog or a forum-style site with user generated content.  For a great example of a venting site check out clientsfromhell.com

It’s a good idea for you choose a niche that you are genuinely interested because it will make generating the content (writing the text for the website) a whole lot easier & quicker & the genuine interest in the topic tends to produce higher quality articles.

The fact is that no matter how great the niche you find is, if your content is poor or low quality your site won’t go anywhere. Your users will leave as fast as they come and your site will quickly fall off the radar.

Points To Consider:

One important point to consider when coming up with topics and keyword ideas is what the earning potential might be of the topic. For example, topics that provide a solution to a problem tend to convert better than hobby topics in many cases. Of course this isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it is something to consider when brainstorming.

For example, if you list ‘gardening’ as one of the topics you are interested in writing about, then addressing specific problems that gardeners face (such as cutting down on maintenance tasks, organic insect and pest control, or even a problem that is common to a specific plan – such as black spot on roses) could be a great starting point, providing opportunities for you to promote and create digital products to sell on the topic that users will be more open to buy because they provide a solution they need.

Choosing A Niche – Narrowing Down Your Keyword Ideas

Once you’re list is complete,  it’s time to start narrowing down your list of topics to be as specific as possible. If you like dog training for example, what breed of dogs have you trained? Was it a mastiff, a boxer, a mutt? Or what did you train them to do? Walk on a leash? Do cool tricks? Dance the box step? Is there a difference between training different breeds of dogs?

If you aren’t sure about a topic or how to make it more specific, don’t worry, in the next step we’ll be doing keyword research to help whittle down the topics and weed out the ones that are too competitive or saturated with other sites offering the same information.

Topic Ideas Narrowed Down
gardening organic vegetable gardening, flower gardens, orchids
childcare Potty Training, Sleep training, Early Education
Fitness Fitness in Your 40′s,  Metabolism
laundry  stain removal, organic laundry products

That’s it!

The goal at this point is to have have a list of a few possible niches, and they should be narrowed down as much as possible to a specific point of interest! Great work!

Niche Website Guide – Getting Started

Get Started - Niche IdeasThe first, and possibly most crucial, step in creating your first online business is coming up with a good topic for your niche site. This includes doing some keyword and competition research to make sure your site has the best possible chance of climbing to the first page of Google (where all the action happens).

The general research steps we’re going to take are:

  • Brainstorming –  come up with a list of ideas
  • Keyword Research – to narrow down topic & find a good niche
  • Competition Research – to make sure the topic isn’t saturated.

What is a Niche?

This might seem like and obvious question, but it’s one that is important to understand when deciding on a topic for your new site. Niche generally means a small place or part, but when speaking of niche websites it is much more specific.

A niche is a very specific topic or subtopic. Dog Training is too general to be considered a niche, but “Training A Dog to Fetch” or “Teaching Puppies not to Bite” would be.  ‘Childcare & Parenting’ is too general, but “Potty Training Toddlers” isn’t.

You could even go further and narrow it down to ‘potty training made simple’. These are just examples, and not necessarily ideas I suggest so don’t rush off and buy the domain just yet!

It’s important to being this process with a clear understanding of what the end goal is, a very specific target topic.  This will make it easier for you to rank in google and will provide you with a strong target market of users who need the specific information or product you are offering.

What is a Keyword?

‘keyword’ is a word or short phrase that a user types into the search bar to find a website. Longer phrases or sentences are called long-tail keywords.

For example “Dogs” or “Dog Breeds” would be considered keywords, ‘Dog Breeders in Middle Georgia”would be considered a long-tail keyword.

Ranking for a single popular keyword, such as ‘dogs’ or ‘gadgets’, can be difficult because of  how common and popular they are, and the level of sites that are competing for the term. In many instances ranking for phrases or long-tail keywords is much easier and can be just as profitable.

Most internet marketing guru’s will suggest you choose a topic that you are passionate about, but I’ll take a step back and suggest it at least be a topic you are interested in & could easily write about.

The reason for that is that a lot of people get wrapped up trying to find a niche that they feel ‘passionate’ about, but to be honest very few people have a lot of passions. They might have hobbies, or areas of interest, but passion is just a big step up from “interest in”.

So when going through the various phases of keyword research, make sure your selections are topics you at least find interesting. If you have no interest whatsoever in a topic, like knitting, then running a site about it is probably not a good idea. You’ll get bored and have a hard time coming up with new material for your site, and it will eventually stagnate drop out of the rankings.

Applying For Adsense

Where To Start

The first step to start using AdSense on your website is applying for an account, but before you do there are a few milestones you need to have passed in your website construction.

  • Have the domain name & hosting set up
  • The websites structure completed
  • Have the majority of your content live on your site

In other words, creating your first AdSense account has to be one of the final steps in completing your site. If you have created a useful site, with a decent amount of original content then getting accepted should be rather painless. There is a two set process to getting accepted, the first is the preliminary check to make sure your site has enough content on it to qualify, once you’ve passed that step you’re asked to install the ad code where you want the ads to appear on your site and there is a review period during which the AdSense team will check and make sure your site is compliant with AdSense content policies.

Note: in some countries, such as India, there is a six month waiting period on all AdSense applications, so be patient.

It’s very important to read the AdSense Terms of Service & Content Policies to keep your account in good standing & make the most out of it. The general rule of thumb with AdSense content is, if you wouldn’t do it in church or with your grandma watching, it’s probably against the rules. The types of content that will get your application rejected are as follows:

  • Pornography, adult or mature content
  • Violent content
  • Content related to racial intolerance or advocacy against any individual, group or organization
  • Excessive profanity
  • Hacking/cracking content
  • Gambling or casino-related content
  • Illicit drugs and drug paraphernalia content
  • Sales of beer or hard alcohol
  • Sales of tobacco or tobacco-related products
  • Sales of prescription drugs
  • Sales of weapons or ammunition (e.g. firearms, firearm components, fighting knives, stun guns)
  • Sales of products that are replicas or imitations of designer or other goods
  • Sales or distribution of coursework or student essays
  • Content regarding programs which compensate users for clicking ads or offers, performing searches, surfing websites or reading emails
  • Any other content that is illegal, promotes illegal activity or infringes on the legal rights of others.

It is important that your website isn’t comprised solely of links to other sites either, such as links to download programs or apps from other sites, it has to have a solid foundation of original written content or you’ll run into problems with your application or could have your AdSense account banned down the line.

In short, if you plan on using adsense on your site, be sure to only apply for AdSense once your account is complete or at least very nearly complete, and be patient, it can take up a while to hear back from them about the status of your application, but it’s worth the wait as AdSense is easily one of the most profitable ways to monetize a website
